Zaccheus - A Wee Little Man

Luke 19:1-10 And going in, He (Jesus) passed through Jericho. And behold, there was a man named Zaccheus, who was a chief tax-collector. And he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus, to see who He was. And he could not because of the press, because he was little in stature. And he ran in front and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him. For He was to pass through that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him. And He said to him, Zaccheus! Hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house. And hurrying he came down, and received Him joyfully. And seeing, they all murmured, saying, He has gone in to stay with a sinful man. And Zaccheus stood and said to the Lord, Behold, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor. And in anything I accused anyone falsely, I restore it fourfold. And Jesus said to him, This day salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Remember the song we sang as children?
Zaccheus was a wee little man
And a wee little man was he
He climbed up in a sycamore tree
For the Lord he wanted to see...

You know, I am short too, and it can be a pain to be short. I mean you have to ask for help to reach things, you can't see over anything or anyone and you have to walk faster to keep up with tall people. But that is another story...

Can you imagine how excited and honored Zaccheus must have been that Jesus even spoke to him, much less wanted to come to his house. When Zaccheus joyfully received Jesus into his house – he also joyfully received Him into his heart. He repented of his sins, gave half of his goods to the poor and received the gift of salvation. As Jesus said in verse 10: For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Father, We Thank You again for the beautiful stories from Your word. But most of all we thank You for Your Son who took on our filthy sins and paid for them with His life. You are such an awesome God! In Jesus’ name. Amen
