The Woman Caught In Adultery
John 8:3-11 And the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman taken in adultery. And standing her in the midst, they said to Him, Teacher, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the Law commanded us that such should be stoned. You, then, what do you say? They said this, tempting Him so that they might have reason to accuse Him. But bending down, Jesus wrote on the ground with His finger, not appearing to hear. But as they continued to ask Him, He lifted Himself up and said to them, He who is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her. and again bending down, He wrote on the ground. And hearing, and being convicted by conscience, they went out one by one, beginning at the oldest, until the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. And bending back up, and seeing no one but the woman, Jesus said to her, woman, where are the ones who accused you? Did not one give judgment against you? And she said, No one, Lord. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I give judgment. Go, and sin no more.
This is a powerful story, the woman was caught “red handed” and yet Jesus did not condemn her. Can you imagine? Every court and judge in the world would have condemned her – but not Jesus. He is such a forgiving and loving Savior.
Then Jesus goes on to convince the scribes and Pharisees that only if they were without sin should they cast a stone at her. And they left, on-by-one without even tossing a pebble! These were the “righteous” people of their time but they did not throw stones.
But you know, I have always wondered what it was that Jesus wrote on the ground. I am sure that it was something profound – but what?
Anyway, when the men went away Jesus asked her “where are the ones who accused you?” She said that they left, Jesus told the woman “Go, and sin no more.” You know, that is what He say’s to us as well, "Go, and sin no more".
Father, We humble ourselves before You, knowing that we are unworthy, but thanking You for Your grace and for our Savior Jesus Christ. Please continue to guide us and bless us. In Jesus’ name. Amen
